About The Breed - Bernedoodles

Lighthouse Labradoodles

🐾 About the Bernedoodle

The Bernedoodle is a carefully developed cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, created to combine the loyalty and gentle nature of the Bernese with the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle. The result is a versatile, affectionate, and highly trainable companion suited to a wide range of families and lifestyles.

Bernedoodles are available in a variety of sizes—standard, medium, and mini —depending on the Poodle parent. Their coats range from soft waves to tight curls and can display striking colours and patterns, including traditional tri-colour, phantom, or merle variations.

šŸ’• Temperament

Renowned for their balanced and intuitive temperament, Bernedoodles are loyal, affectionate, and eager to please. They thrive on human interaction and enjoy being part of the family, whether that means joining outdoor adventures or relaxing at home.

Their Bernese heritage contributes to their gentle and devoted nature, while their Poodle lineage brings intelligence, confidence, and adaptability. This combination makes them excellent companions, suitable for families with children, first-time dog owners, and even therapy or assistance work.

Calm yet playful, smart yet sensitive, the Bernedoodle embodies the best of both breeds—an ideal blend of beauty, temperament, and companionship.

Bernedoodle Coats

Bernedoodles coats come in a variety of colours but here at Lighthouse we will predominately breed the traditional Phantom,  Phantom tri, chocolate tri and Merle tri - on the odd occasion we will see other colours but our focus will be on these. We will also be looking to predominately add FF ( furnishing on face ) and -/- ( less curl coats, more of the shaggy ) when it comes to the genetics of their coats - to avoid as much of the shedding as we can and to make sure the majority of our puppies have those traditional bearded faces that we all love so much.

We have had many people contact us for Labradoodles over the years and more recently Bernedoodles and one of the questions that people often ask is "are they going to fade" and does a 10/10 Intensity guarantee non fade - the answer is simply YES they might fade and NO, a 10/10 Intensity does not guarantee non fading.

There are other genetic factors that contribute to the degree of fading you will get in any dog. The idea of a "non-fading" dog is a breeders ideal , but it is not a scientific certainty sadly, regardless of what some breeders advertise on their websites.  A common mistake made by some new breeders is to think that the higher the Intensity the less likely for fading. Though it is used to indicate the richest possible pigment colour, while the 10/10 rating describes the desired deep , non fading colour, it is a description of the current pigment level and not a guarantee against fading due to other genetic factors like the progressive greying genes ( G locus ) present in breeds like poodles and their crosses.

This gene causes dogs to be born with full colour which then progressively fades to a grey or silver over time. This gene is especially common in dogs with continuously growing hair, like groodles, Bernedoodles and Labradoodles etc. Then there is the Dilution gene to take into consideration - this is seperate from the Intensity genes and can also contribute to fading over time. Genetic studies have shown that pigment intensity is a complex trait involving multiple genes.

In some cases, variations exist that can cause fading despite other genes coding for a 10/10 score. For sure there are some forms of testing we as breeders can carry out to help limit the amount of fading that may occur and as you move down the generation track of your lines you learn more about your own lines and can therefore be a little more informed as to those that lighten and those that seem to hold colour better.

We have perfected the strong chocolates and phantoms in our Labradoodles lines and will do the same in time with our Bernedoodles - but due to the complexity of coat colour, many breeders rightly so, caution prospective owners that coat colour may in deed change over time.
